Premier Interschools KES vs JEPPE- Supreme Schools Rivalry
17 April 2013King Edward VII School will play Jeppe at King Edward School on 20 April 2013 in a Premier Interschools game that will be televised at 15:15 on SuperSport 1. Kick off will be at 1pm, so the broadcast will be delayed.
The Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools magazine show will hit television screens tonight for the first time in the build-up to Saturday’s season-opening match between Johannesburg rivals KES and Jeppe. The first episode, which will preview the match and provide viewers with in-depth insights on the rich traditions and rugby legends associated with the participating schools, will be broadcast on SuperSport One, SuperSport One Africa and SuperSport CSN at 17:45.
Repeats of the episode will be broadcast on Thursday morning and Saturday morning in the lead-up to the encounter. Similar shows will be broadcast weekly until August in line with the scheduled matches.
Premier Interschools is more than just First Team Rugby – it is about the entire school participating and forging lifelong friendships on and off the field. The magazine show will cover behind-the-scenes stories and broadcast footage unique to each Interschools match. For example, last year, the sons of Ruan van der Merwe and Lean Marnewick who featured in the same Grey College First Team in 1985, Dante van der Merwe and Lezar Marnewick respectively, lined up against each other in the Paarl Boys’ High vs Grey College Premier Interschools. The magazine show will provide coverage of these unique behind-the-scenes stories to further emphasize the rich heritage of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.
Interviews with famous ‘Old Boys’, including prominent Springboks from each school will also be showcased. In the first episode Bryan Habana shares his memories from wearing the famous red jersey from KES.
Looking at this week’s derby, two Springboks have emerged from KES – Bryan Habana and Joe van Niekerk – while 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning coach Jake White represented Jeppe’s first team and returned as their head coach from 1989 to 1994. History favours KES on Saturday as they have won more than the double the matches between the sides dating back to 1935. They also boast the impressive record of having won eight of the last 10 match-ups between the sides since 2003. But Jeppe is expected to draw motivation from the fact that they beat KES 28-13 last year and registered a narrow 17-13 victory in 2010.
True to its slogan “Honouring Heritage and Playing for the Future”, Premier Interschools is about History, Heritage and Tradition, and telling stories. This is expected to be a big draw-card for spectators and viewers as the series makes its mark in the next few months.
