KES Old Boy Steve Jaspan awarded Order of Merit!
13 November 2015Congratulations to King Edward VII School Old Boy, Steve Jaspan, Class of 1967, on this fantastic award and achievement!
Steve Jaspan’s award as the first recipient of the African Hockey Federations (AfHF) Order of Merit is the culmination of 25 years of service on the AfHF’s Executive Board, 20 of which were as Senior Vice President which included 3 years as Acting President.
He has also served on, inter alia, the Council, (later renamed Executive Board) the Executive Board and chaired various committees of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Over the same 25 years period. He presently chairs High Performance and Coaching in the FIH.
The FIH awarded him their Order of Merit in 2002, the first South African to receive this honour.
Prior to this he had been President of the SA Men’s Hockey Association (the youngest ever), played a pivotal role in unifying South African Hockey after which he served as the inaugural President of the unified South African Hockey Association.
His service to SA Hockey covered a period of some 30 years in various roles in addition to the Presidency. Prior to that he played international hockey for South Africa and captained the SA Indoor Hockey team.
He was awarded the State President’s Award for hockey in 1975 after the SA team defeated the Olympic Champions, Germany, in an eight nation’s tournament in Johannesburg en route to winning the tournament.
